St. Charles Elementary FDK FI Students Have an 'Amazingly Delicious' Field Trip at Topper’s Pizza in Chelmsford

03/08/2016 - In Mme Wissell and Mme Huneault’s FDK FI class, St. Charles Catholic Elementary School students have been doing an inquiry about pizza for the last few weeks. They have been writing menus, ordering sizes from small, medium and large and counting slices. At the art centre, students painted pizzas and decorated pizza boxes. In the dramatic play centre, students created their own pizzeria, where they took orders and filled the order by building pizzas using ‘dough’.  Read more...

03/08/2016 - Students at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School in Chelmsford had the opportunity to admire a commemorative door that arrived at their school. This symbolic door contains beautifully laser-etched panels representing every school in the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Christmas is Giving at St. Charles Elementary

12/18/2015 - With Christmas just around the corner, families at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School came together to generously support people in their community who are less fortunate. Donations of canned goods were collected over the 3 weeks of Advent to support the local food bank, Friendship House. Last year, the school collected 3014 cans and the goal this year was to beat that number by 1 can. With true school spirit, RAMS collected 3200 cans!! Way to Go RAMS! Read more...


St. Charles Elementary Students Warming Hearts, Hands and Toes at Christmas!

12/14/2015 - Showing true RAM spirit, students at St. Charles Catholic Elementary outdid themselves again! Under the direction of teachers Holly-Anne Swain and Emily Maxwell, the Sock and Mitt Crew, made up of Intermediate students, created posters and announcements to encourage students to bring in new socks and mitts to be donated to the Salvation Army. The crew collected over 800 pairs of socks and mitts to be donated to the Salvation Army this Christmas. Way to go RAMS!  Read more...

Bellmore New Chair of the Board at SCDSB

12/02/2015 - On Tuesday, December 1, 2015 Trustee Michael Bellmore was acclaimed as the new Board Chair for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Born in Sudbury, Bellmore is a proud alumnus of Sudbury Catholic Schools (Immaculate Conception and St. Charles College). He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2010, however he was elected to the former Sudbury District Roman Catholic Separate School Board in 1994 as one of the youngest ever elected, and served until 1997. Read more...

Pies for Rice at St. Charles Elementary

11/02/2015 - Staff and students at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School have been on a mission to raise money for a good cause. On October 16th, students attended a presentation by Tammy Pomroy, a former Sudbury resident who now lives in Cambodia. The presentation was about a school that Mrs. Pomroy founded called ABCs and Rice. This school is a reverse tuition school where some of the poorest students in the area are not able to attend because they must stay at home to help earn money. At ABCs and Rice, students get paid in rice at the end of each month for their attendance.  Read more...

As the Toronto Blue Jays entered game 5 of the division series on Wednesday, October 14th, staff and students wore their Jays gear for a Jays Day. 11 Years and Running for the Johnathan Hetu Walk at St. Charles Elementary

06/12/2015 - This year's students and staff at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School may not have had the opportunity to meet Johnathan Hetu, a student who passed away in 2004 after a two year battle with leukemia, however his memory continues to live on each year as the school holds its annual Johnathan Hetu walk. Teacher David Nicholls felt compelled to do something to honour Johnathan’s memory and so he started the Johathan Hetu walk 11 years ago, and has continued it every year. Funds are collected and donated to the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer.  Read more...

Update on Negotiations

04/24/2015 - You may have heard in the media that the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association ((OECTA), representing elementary, secondary and occasional teachers in our Board voted to approve strike action. Central bargaining is continuing between the province, unions and the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association (OCSTA), which represents Catholic school boards at the provincial table. At present, we are not aware of any planned labour disruptions by OECTA. Read more...

Ten Year Anniversary for Johhathan Hetu Walk at St. Charles Elementary

06/11/2014 - For the past nine years, students and staff of St. Charles Catholic Elementary have taken part in the Johnathan Hetu walk. Johnathan Hetu was an exceptional student at the school and passed away in 2004 after a two-year battle with leukemia. Teacher David Nicholls, who was to have Johnathan in his class that next year, felt compelled to do something to honour Johnathan’s memory – thus the creation of the Johnathan Hetu walk. Students were asked to raise funds, and all the monies were donated to the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer (N.O.F.C.C.). This year, students and staff once again participated in the walk and raised an outstanding amount of $7112. 77 bringing their grand total to close to $60,000 for their ten year anniversary of the walk.  Read more...


Upcoming Event - Johnathan Hetu Memorial Walk/Fundraiser

06/02/2014 - This Friday, June 6th, St. Charles Elementary will be hosting its 10th annual Johathan Hetu Walk. The walk will take place from 1:30 - 2:30 at St. Charles Elementary School in Chelmsford. The walk is in remembrance of Johnathan Hetu. Johnathan lost his life to cancer and the walk is held in his memory with all proceeds of the walk going to the NOFCC. St. Charles has been able to raise over $51,000 since the beginning of the walk.  Read more...

Twin Day at St. Charles Elementary - Would the Real Mr. Soehner, please stand up?!

03/28/2014 - The RAM school spirit was alive and thriving at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School once again! Staff and students coordinated outfits to look like a twin or someone they admired. They were seeing double all day as they travelled the halls! Buddy Luoma, a year one FDK student, wanted to dress like his principal, Mr. David Soehner. They both planned to dress the same. On the morning of Twin Day, Buddy stopped in at the office to show Mr. Soehner how he was dressed up just like the principal. Much to Mr. Soehner's surprise, several students and staff also dressed up in the black pants, dress shirts and ties!! NOFCC Presents Plaque to St. Charles Elementary

11/05/2013 - On October 29th, Dayna Caruso a representative from the NOFCC visited St. Charles Elementary to award them with a donation plaque for the donations that have been raised from the Johnathan Hetu walk. The plaque shows the nine years of donations that St. Charles has been able to raise for the NOFCC. The walk to date has raised just over $50,000. The walk has flourished over the years with the first year donation being around $1,300 to the last years donation of over $7,400. The walk is in remembrance of former student Johnathan Hetu, who past away from cancer.  Read more...

05/10/2013 - During Catholic Education Week at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School, families in the Mme Martin's JKFI, Mme Daoust's SKFI and Mrs. Malafarina's JK/SKR classes came together for a “Come Read with Me” day. At this engaging and hands on session, parents received tips about reading with their children and the importance of oral language. Mme Martin then modelled a read aloud and parents then selected a book from the teacherís bins of favorites or guided reading books that the students are using and practiced the strategies they learned.  Read more...

Bringing Spring into the Classroom at St. Charles

Bags for Beds at St. Charles Elementary

04/15/2013 - As part of the Dearness Conservation Program, students from St. Charles Catholic Elementary School in Chelmsford collected milk bags once again this school year to donate to the “Bags for Beds” project. A total of 1600 bags were brought in over a four week period. The opportunity to participate in this project supports students to deepen their understanding of how a seemingly simple recycling activity results in a profound improvement in the quality of life for others.  Read more...

02/22/2013 - Have you ever wanted to be just like someone else? Students and staff at St. Charles Elementary dressed as their 'twin' today to show their school spirit! Many people dressed as each other, while others dressed as a famous twin. Pictured is grade 5 student, Daniella Lowes and the principal, Mrs. St. Denis. Daniella surprised the principal by coming to school dressed as her, and explained that if she "could be anyone at all, she wanted to be Mrs. St.Denis". Students at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School Collect Pine Cones for Wild at Heart Animal Refuge Centre in Lively

01/10/2013 - The students at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School have collected thousands of pine cones this year to support the Wild at Heart Animal Refuge Centre in Lively. The centre needs the pine cones to feed some of the smaller animals in the winter. These caring students collected these cones in the fall as a part of their Dearness Conservation "Direction" challenge (East Eagles, South Turtles, West Buffalos and North Bears). Students were asked to try to each bring in 1 closed pine cone, which would be 330 pine cones for the Centre. The response was overwhelming as some students brought in hundreds of cones each! Read more...

11/08/2012 - Students from St. Charles Elementary look on as JK students Sophie and Gavin Patterson, along with their grandfather, George Patterson bring up a cross remembering those who served in the Korean War. It was a privilege to have members from the Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 553 Chelmsford join the school, including Mr.Rogerson, a parent legionnaire, in our Remembrance Day Celebration. Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins at St. Charles

10/25/2012 - JK/SKR students from St. Charles Catholic Elementary School have started an inquiry all about pumpkins.  It all started when their teacher, Amy Malafarina, brought in some mini pumpkins as a decoration in the class.  Students began to ask questions, so they decided to do an inquiry.  They prepared questions along with the daycare children in the school, and set out to get the answers.  Read more...


French Immersion students are Proud to be Francophone

09/26/2012 - On September 25th, students from the French immersion program at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School took to the streets of Chelmsford to share in their Franco-Ontarian pride. September 25th is celebrated across Ontario by many Francophones to show pride and support for their language and to honour the contributions of French speaking Ontarians to society. It is known as 'La journée du drapeau Franco-Ontarien' because on this date in 1975, the official Franco-Ontarian flag was raised for the first time to show that the French language is still very alive in this province.  Read more...

St. Charles Kindergarten Students Prepare for a Safe and Enjoyable Summer!

06/28/2012 - Kindergarten students at St. Charles Elementary School have been "attending" Camp Wanna-Learn-A-Lot (at school) recently where they have been pitching tents, roasting marshmallows, fishing, and paddling across imaginary lakes. The students are getting a head start to the summer with literacy and numeracy activities centred on camping and learning about the outdoors. In Memory of Johnathan

06/19/2012 - On Friday June 8th St. Charles Elementary School in Chelmsford held its 8th annual Johanthan Hetu Walk. Johanthan was a student that attended St.Charles School 9 years ago before he passed away with cancer. This year St. Charles was proud to present $8 957.64 to the NOFCC in support of other children struggling with cancer. This brings the eight year total for the walk to $43 536.64. St. Charles Elementary Participates in Annual Hat Day

05/14/2012 - St. Charles Catholic Elementary School participated in hat day on May 11th. This is in rememberance of Johnathan Hetu a past student of St. Charles School who passed away from cancer. When Johanthan would return to school he would wear a hat to cover his hairless head, the result of his chemotherapy. Students were encouraged to wear a hat to remembver him and all other children who have gone through the same experience. Students paid a dollar to wear a hat. The money that is raised goes to the NOFCC. Read more...


Earth Day 2012 at St. Charles Elementary

Students and staff at St. Charles Catholic School in Chelmsford wish to thank VALE for their generous donation of seedlings. The campaign was kicked off with the story "THE TREE" by author Dana Lyons. Each student was given a seedling to bring home to plant in honour of Earth day.  Read more...


Understanding Our Carbon Footprint at St. Charles Elementary

04/20/2012 - As part of Earth Day activities, students in Eileen Harris's Grade 2/3 class at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School in Chelmsford, learned about their carbon footprint. After reading a variety of books and researching ways to help reduce their use of resources, students came up with a number of activities that help lessen human impact upon the environment. Activities as simple as using clothes lines, using reusable shopping bags and riding their bicycles more often to more innovative and ambitious activities such as installing solar panels and roof top gardening were included.  Read more...

Partners Sign Community Threat Assessment Protocol

04/04/2012 - Representatives of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, area school boards and local agencies signed a Community Threat Assessment Protocol on March 27, 2012, pledging to work together to ensure schools remain safe for students and staff. The Community Threat Assessment Protocol is a collaborative response to student behaviour that may pose a risk to other students, staff and members of the community. Under the initiative, school boards, police and community partners will share information, advice and support. Plans will be developed to minimize risk.  Read more...

Bags for Beds at St. Charles Elementary

02/15/2012 - The Dearness Conservation team at St. Charles Catholic Elementary Catholic school challenged their students to bring in milk 'bags for beds' and they did - "We can't believe that the school collected over 2000 milk bags" says Rolande Nault, Club 50 Azilda member, 'this will definitely make life a lot more comfortable for children and their families, especially those children in the Mariam Centre Orphanage and Outpatient Care in Haiti'. The ladies at Club 50 Azilda take milk bags, cut them into strips, tie them together and then roll them up into balls just like yarn, then crochet or knit them into finished mats. These mats are very useful in keeping out parasites and can be used as beds for surgeries as they can be washed for the next patient. Read more...


100 Days of School Celebrated at St. Charles Elementary

02/13/2012 - Students at St. Charles Elementary Catholic school enjoyed '100 days of school' on February 10th. Students were engaged in math and literacy activities to celebrate the big day. Junior Kindergarten French Immersion student, Makenna Jolette was all smiles when it was time to count to 100. 01/31/2012 - On January 27th, Family Literacy Day, parents of St. Charles Catholic Elementary School were invited to attend their child's classroom to play board games as a way to embrace the learning opportunity to practice literacy as a family and spending time together. 03/27/2011 - On Thursday, March 24, staff from both the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and the Rainbow District School Board were given the opportunity to attend a workshop with Chris D’Souza on Building Inclusive Schools and Communities.
